I have always dreamed of moving to Alaska, buying a small acreage (say 200-300 acres) and building a log cabin with materials found on the land. In college I would tell my girlfriends of this dream as a litmus test of the sincerity of our relationship. Oddly enough, most of my girlfriends refused to have anything to do with me after I explained this marvelous outdoor life I had envisioned. Go figure. One young lady was not scared off by the thought of living in a wood shack and raising nine children in a complete wilderness. That wonderfully free spirited lady later became my wife Margaret.

Jump ahead fifteen years and we are finally realizing our dream. There are a few slight adjustments I had to make: I live in Iowa instead of Alaska (some would say I still live in the wilderness), the small log cabin will be a 2400 square foot log home and we only have two children. Other then that, things are going along exactly as I planned, I think....

Anyway, we bought a couple of acres of property in a subdivision called Turkey Creek just north of Iowa City a few years ago. We will begin building our Log Home in the Spring of 1996 and have called our future home Rebel Base (were both big Star Wars Fans) We looked at a number of log home companies and choose Wilderness Log Homes from Wisconsin. I am acting as my own general contractor and plan on doing some of the building myself to save additional money (sweat equity).
