The jobs not done till its straight and plumb.

August 24, 1996

My brother in-law Dave, and his family stopped out to visit us this weekend. As you may recall, Dave is the one who designed our house. Dave is a builder out of the Chicago suburbs and one of his jobs is to check the quality of the framing on his companies homes. He took his tools and went through the house marking areas of framing that needed additional support, joist hangers, drywall backers, loose boards, and uneven walls caused by warped dimensional lumber. The builder can then come through and fix all the areas he has marked. This is not meant as a reflection on the quality of construction, which Dave proclaimed as excellent in our case, its just that its easy to overlook some items when building an entire house. Many of the things Dave spotted had already been flagged by the builder, but it helps to have someone else walk through it.

I also put Dave to work helping me build a small retaining wall to keep the dirt and runoff away from the guest-room window, a recent problem thanks to the large mound of dirt covering our water line just around the corner.
