What a great skylight!

Today we finally started to get a feeling for how big the great room was going to be. The roof pitch is steeper over the great room which gives the house some architectural interest and helps the snow runoff. A warning to those of you planning to build in the midwest, don't even consider a shallow California style roof pitch unless you like leaky roofs or worse a collapsed roof from the weight of the snow.

We also talked today with our septic/water contractor. The water connection will not be too difficult since we are only 45 ft. from the neighborhood water lines. Apparently he uses some kind of device that taps the primary water line while it is still under pressure, I hope I get a chance to see what this machine looks like. The septic field will require a lot more work clearing trees. We need an area thats 30ft. x 100ft. I don't need to clear every tree so I will get together with my landscape architect and select the trees worth keeping.
